A Wimbledon pub in helping to tackle loneliness, one Monday at a time.

Earlier in the year The Alexandra in Wimbledon Hill Road took up the task of inviting people down once a week for free food and and a few laughs.

With Christmas fast approaching, Jackie Davis recently started going and only had glowing things to say.

"Sarah and Mick Dore, landlords of the Alexandra laid on a Christmas party for the 'meet up Mondays' group of approximately 60 people," she said.

"A wonderful selection of food sandwiches, nibbles, and drinks were provided completely free of charge to all who came along to enjoy the fun and festivities."

When Mr Dore and his wife first set up the event they were unsure how well it would go.

But now after months of success, it is fair to say that the community has loved every minute of it.

"We hope it will give to the communities, retired people who are lonely for whatever reason, somewhere to come and meet and make friends and to have a bit of fun and hopefully something to look forward to each week," he said.

But free food and some good chat wasn't the only thing that Ms Davis highlighted from her night out.

"The beautiful voices of children from the Bishop Gill School in Lake Road entertained with carols whilst everyone enjoyed the food and fayre and reverie," she added.

"Sarah was presented with a beautiful bouquet which expressed gratitude and thanks from a group of members of the club."
