A Wimbledon KFC closed for a week due to a rat infestation will remain so as ordered by a court.

The fast-food store in The Broadway was temporarily Closed by Merton Council's food safety and hygiene on November 23, but more disgusting details have since come to light.

In a note currently posted on the door it reads: "Due to the state and condition of the premises and equipment used for the food business the authorised officer determined it posed an imminent risk of injury to the health of customers.

"By the notice the respondent was prohibited from using the premises as a fast-food retail shop or similar business

"And the Wimbledon Magistratses’ Court being satisfied that the health risk condition is fulfilled as there is an imminent risk of injury to health, due to the state and condition of the premises and equipment used for the purpose of the business, due to the infestation of rats within the premises.

"Rat droppings were found throughout the kitchen and store to such an extent there was a serious risk of contamination of food stuffs and the ice/iced water dispenser.

"Further we are satisfied that this gives rise to the risk of contamination of food prepared at the food business intended for human consumption

"It is ordered that the use of the premises for the purpose of this or any similar food business is prohibited."

The last time prior to this that the store was inspected by the council's food hygiene team was in December of 2017. On that occasion it received the best possible score of five out of five.

A KFC spokesman said previously that they were "confident this is an isolated issue and are working closely with the EHO to resolve it and get the restaurant back open as soon as possible.”
