A Wimbledon KFC has been forced to shut after a rat infestation was discovered.

The fast food store in The Broadway has been closed since Friday (November 23) and a notice put on its window by Merton Council's food safety and hygiene team explained the disgusting reason why.

"There is an imminent risk to health due to an infestation serious enough to result in the actual contamination of food and a significant risk of contamination of rat droppings were found throughout the kitchen and storeroom," the council's notice said.

Another notice posted on the store's front door apologised "for any inconvenience" and said that it would be "closed until further notice."

The last time prior to this that the store was inspected by the council's food hygiene team was in December of 2017. On that occasion it received the best possible score of five out of five.

A KFC spokesman said: “We’re confident this is an isolated issue and are working closely with the EHO to resolve it and get the restaurant back open as soon as possible.”
