Residents in Strawberry Hill are appalled at the proposed control parking zone on their road.

The proposed plans would impose a CPZ on the residential roads between Twickenham Road and Wellington Road. However, residents in Wellesley Road are wholeheartedly opposed to the imposed change due to the ‘disproportionate’ affect it has on their road.

A resident on the road, Lloyd Reynolds, who is leading the lobby against the CPZ said: “We were alerted to the document by a Resident’s Association and attempted to follow the proposals online but found it very difficult to view the exact details and attempted to download the map but were unable to do so.

“When we did source the exact details, we were appalled at the proposed extent of yellow lines and meters that were proposed for Wellesley Road and the restrictions that were to be imposed on residents.

“Whilst many are generally in favour of some parking control, it was unanimously regarded that the proposals for Wellesley Road - specifically between Spencer Road and Hampton Road - were totally out of proportion, and not what we had supported.

“The majority of Wellesley Road residents supported and voted for a CPZ during the times of 10.00 to 12.00 and we now find this is proposed to be 10.00 to 16.30.”

Mr Reynolds spoke to the 35 households in the affected area. 30 of these residents said they had not seen a letter outlining the proposals. Once the were made aware of them, 29 were against the proposals.

The main reason for the opposition is because the CPZ would reduce parking for residents due to yellow lines. Mr Reynolds said: “We understood that the introduction of a CPZ was intended to assist the residents and not to hamper them but consider this proposal to be extremely restrictive to the residents.

“Indeed, the Council’s own summary suggests that a CPZ of 10.00 to 12.00 would adequately resolve or dramatically improve the situation. Anything longer than this would prove highly disruptive to residents for a minimal or nil additional benefit.”

A Richmond Council spokesperson said: “The consultation letter was distributed to all properties within the consultation area which will become the CPZ and have recently written to all properties seeking views on the parking layout.”

Mr Reynolds and the community in Wellesley Road will continue to lobby against the proposals.
