A man has been arrested after a woman was allegedly raped in an alleyway during broad daylight.

Police were called to the reports near to Alma Road, Carshalton, at around 3pm on Sunday (October 14).

The victim, who is in her 50s, was walking when she saw two men on a bridge at Carshalton Ponds.

Police say both the suspects, who were “complete strangers” to her, then followed her.

It was when she approached an alleyway near to Shorts Road that both men "grabbed her" before she was reportedly raped.

The two suspects were spotted by members of the public and given chase as they ran towards Alma Road.

Officers soon arrived and a 32-year-old Romanian man was arrested on suspicion of rape but the other suspect is still at large.

He is described as white, standing at 5ft 6in, of a slim build, in his early 20s, and had an eastern European accent.

He was wearing dark clothing at the time of the incident, according to detectives.

Officers from the Met’s child abuse and sexual offences command (CASO) are investigating.

Detective Inspector Keith Ward of the Met’s CASO unit said: “This was an assault by two strangers on a lone woman in broad daylight. The courage of the victim and members of the public enabled us to arrest one man, but another suspect remains at large.

“I would like to reassure the public that we are doing everything we can to trace and arrest this man.

"We believe this man to be dangerous and we are appealing to the public to come forward with any information they may have.

“If you heard or saw anything of the offence, came to the victim’s aid or saw the men running off, please call us.

“Any witnesses who saw the events leading up to the attack, such as two men in the area prior to the assault, should also call.

“Any information provided could be vital in bringing a dangerous offender to justice.”

Police are urging people with information to call officers on 101 and quote the reference CAD 4562/14Oct.
