It is a good day to be a cricket fan in Mitcham, or at least it should be.

Tomorrow night (September 26) Merton Council's draft Local Plan will be discussed at a meeting and the Mitcham Cricket Green is on the agenda.

Widely believed to be the oldest cricket green in the world, the 333-year-old playing field has come under threat of redevelopment of recently.

In June, plans were revealed to build a 70-bed hotel on the unused parking lot opposite the site.

This, along with a negotiation standstill on the lease of the pavilion next to the carpark, concerned members of the Mitcham Cricket Club who believed this could lead to their ultimate demise.

A month later politicians stood united in their desire to see the lease transfer go ahead.

In the agenda for tomorrow's meeting, that sentiment was echoed.

"The council is seeking to secure the long-term future community ownership and management of the land and buildings associated with Mitcham Cricket Pavilion to facilitate the continuation of cricket being played on the Green," the agenda read.

"This would be facilitated by enabling development on the former car park within the site."

But that's not all that is expected to be brought up.

The issue of what to do with the vacant Burn Bullock was also mentioned in the report, with the council stating its intention is to restore the pub and have it removed from the 'Heritage at Risk' register.
