A set of New Malden tennis courts that were expected to open in time for summer are finally ready to use.

Kingston Council said that "construction delays, issues with hot weather and the courts setting as well as accessing power for the gates" at Beverley Park resulted n the date being pushed back.

But as of August 26, the courts are open.

"We are still waiting for power to be installed at the site and will keep you updated as to when this work will be complete, from which time our online booking system will come into operation," a post on the council's website said.

"This system will allow you to book courts in advance meaning you can organise when you want to play and know that there will be a court available for you."

While playing at the courts will now cost money, up until September 2, the courts will be free in order to "give everyone a chance to try out these fantastic new facilities."

"Anyone can use the courts during these periods, courts will be allocated on a turn up and play basis with one of our staff members organising court bookings, there will also be rackets and balls available for you to borrow," the council said.

"You will be able to play for 45 minutes and if there is nobody waiting for a court you can continue for longer if you would like."

Once the free trial period is over there will be two ways to pay to play.

People can either purchase an annual pass for £50 a year. This pass is valid for everyone in your household and allows you to book a maximum of 1.5 hours of court time per day.

The other option is for those that play on a less regular basis, with half hour bookings to cost £3.
