The best place to grab a pint in London has been announced.

As part of Time Out's Love London awards, people were asked to vote of their favourite pub or bar in the capital.

After five weeks of vote getting, it was Wimbledon pub The Sultan, in Norman Road, that came out on top.

So what do husband and wife owners Helen and Stephen Tribbel put the success down to? Beer of course.

"We are Hop Back Brewery’s only London pub, famous for Summer Lightning, so the real ale is always on top form," Mrs Tribbel said.

"Also it is a welcoming environment where you can get involved in the quiz nights, open mic nights, community garden, beer festivals.

"Although the pub industry has changed we have managed to maintained our status as a traditional English pub whilst adapting to a changing drinking culture."

The Sultan has been open as a pub with the brewery since 1984 but there has been a drinking hole on this site since 1870.

The current building was re-built in the 50s after it was bombed in 1944.

So how does one celebrate taking out such an award? With beer of course.

The pub held a special celebration on Thursday night (May 10) to thank all the customers that made this happen.

"It was a great night, huge turn out and lots of love from the locals," Mr Tribbel said.

"They even did a collection and had a Time Out award cake made for us.

"A few people have asked us how we plan on living up to these lofty standards and we answer the same every time, stick to what we're doing.

"We make a point of not being pretentious and I think people appreciate it, sometimes it's nice to have something that's down to earth."
