Drivers of electric cars will soon be able to charge up in Mitcham.

An application to install three charging points in St Barnabas Road, Mitcham was given the go-ahead by Merton Council on April 18.

The three charging points near the junction with Streatham Road are part of a Transport For London plan to install 6,000 electric car charging points across London.

Work on the network was outsourced to Bluepoint London by TFL.

SSE Enterprise, working on behalf of Bluepoint, said in its planning proposal: “It is anticipated that the introduction of new charge points will encourage more car owners to switch from petrol and diesel cars to more sustainable electric vehicles.

“This new uptake will have a significant positive impact on the air quality within the borough, creating a better environment for local residents.” The charging points, it said, would not result in ‘further stress’ on car parking in the area.

The planning permission means work must be completed in the next three years and conditions include that the council’s highway team must be informed before any work is carried out.

The points will be managed by Source London, which charges up to 9.5p per minute to use a 22kw charger, as well as a £4 a month for a yearly subscription.
