Ursuline High School have opened its new sports pavilion along with three grass pitches, a multi-use hall and catering facility.
The centre will provide sports facilities for over 1,300 pupils at Ursuline High School, a voluntary-aided comprehensive for girls. It will also be available for public use outside of school hours.
Head teacher of Ursuline High School Julia Waters said: "This is the first time in the school’s 125 year history that we have access to a permanent facility.
"We are passionate about promoting girls sports so this is really a landmark moment for us.”
The centre was built by Berkeley Homes as part of the Wimbledon Hill Park development.
Chairman of Berkeley Homes Tony Pidgley - the group responsible for the construction - said: “Sport is fundamental to a great community.
"I know how important this facility is to the school and local neighbourhood. It will host all kinds of events and be a fantastic place for everyone to enjoy. I am absolutely delighted to hand over the pavilion today.”
Councillor Andrew Judge was pleased to see the creation finally come to life.
"The Ursuline is a comprehensive girls’ school, with excellent results," he said.
"But until now they lacked decent sports fields.
It is the Council’s responsibility to ensure that schools in Merton have sports facilities that are as good as they can be and that girls should have the same sports opportunities as boys.
"I am proud to have played a part in its creation."
