A steak restaurant got a grilling on Saturday night when its storage area became engulfed in flames.

Roxie Steak in Garratt Lane, Earlsfield, was empty when the fire started in its outside storage area at about 12.30pm.

Restaurant staff had locked up about half an hour earlier, when the fire broke out and destroyed a backroom area containing freezers.

Four fire engines from Battersea, Tooting, Wandsworth and Wimbledon fire stations attended and put out the blaze in about half an hour.

Fire investigators were at the restaurant yesterday, investigating the cause of the fire.

A Battersea firefighter said the storage area was destroyed, but the restaurant was not damaged.

No-one was injured in the blaze.

Sue Hollway, a co-owner of the Roxie restaurant chain, said the "terrifying" blaze "could have been so much worse."

She thanked neighbours and the "incredible" firefighters who saved the restaurant.

She said: "We are so lucky to have the neighbours we do, whose quick reaction time prevented the fire from spreading.

"We are looking forward to hopefully opening again later on in the week.

"We've got a full team already working on getting us back up and running."
