Wandsworth could see speed restrictions of 20mph on all residential roads after a committee voted in favour of a borough-wide consultation on the proposal last night.

Close to one third of all residential roads in the borough are already due to have 20mph speed limits by the end of the year, after twelve separate consultations in different areas.

But critics have called this "piecemeal" strategy "confusing".

The recommendation for a borough-wide consultation will go ahead if it is approved by Wandsworth Council's cabinet and at a full council meeting later this year.

Conservative Councillor Sarah McDermott, who represents Nightingale ward in Balham said: "It's all very good news.

"When we started off with 20mph zones we only requested zones where people were keen on them, rather than imposing them across the borough.

"But since then 20mph zones have become very popular."

At the start of the year, Wandsworth Council had received 19 petitions in favour of introducing 20mph speed restrictions in different areas of the borough.

Labour MP for Tooting Sadiq Khan, who has previously campaigned for more 20mph restrictions, said: "Borough-wide 20mph limits on all residential roads will make for safer roads, a more pleasant environment to live in and get rid of the confusion caused by the previous piecemeal process.

"This is great news for Wandsworth and a shining example of what committed community campaigning can achieve."

The recommendation was made by councillors from the Community Services Overview and Scrutiny Committee which met at Wandsworth Town Hall last night.
