The last ever meeting of the highly exclusive Wimbledon Literary and Scientific Society has just been taken place, ending a proud tradition dating back no less than 123 years. Membership was open only to the specially invited as distinguished figures from the fields of science, literature, music and business gave talks every month on their fields. The society's first president, Sir William Reece, was the first person in Wimbledon - and further afield - to install electric lighting in his home and his son was instrumental in its introduction to the public sphere too. In many other areas too the Wimbledon Lit Sci provided an opportunity for the talented and influential to exchange ideas. Its departure marks another significant point in the history of the area.
