We have had some Merton Council road works here in Old Merton Park recently when strips of cobbles were planted across roads near several junctions. Very pretty they looked too!
I asked the workmen what they were for and was told that they were ‘rumble strips’. Rumble strips eh? Yes, they would calm traffic, I was told.
I think perhaps that motorists hereabouts should be told as I haven’t seen anyone slow down at all when driving over them. Far more effective as a traffic calming measure is the many potholes that proliferate this and other areas in Merton.
For the Council’s information, a rumble strip is what you drive over when entering the Sainsburys/M & S complex in Colliers Wood. That strip certainly slows you down!
