Councillor Phillip Jones’s letter regarding the high pay of Merton Council officers is very revealing.
He seems to be saying that the people at the top of the council, earning more than David Cameron and his cabinet colleagues, are entirely motivated by personal greed.
Also, there seems to be a strange double standard here.
The council is expecting the public to maintain the borough’s open spaces free of charge in their own time.
And yet, they are not prepared to do their jobs unless the salary is the maximum they can get.
Surely it is time for the pay levels of senior council staff to be reviewed and to ask whether a person who is entirely motivated by money is going to be the best person to serve the borough.
