Chris Tarrant was arrested after a woman claimed she was assaulted during a domestic incident at his home.

The host of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? and The Colour Of Money, was arrested in the early hours at his home in Esher, Surrey. The 62-year-old was questioned by officers at Staines police station, but was later released without charge.

A Surrey Police spokesman confirmed: "Police officers attended an address in Esher at 12.58am on Thursday March 5 following reports of a domestic dispute. A man in his sixties was arrested on suspicion of assault and taken to Staines Police Station. He was later released without any further action being taken."

It is believed the alleged victim was not Tarrant's former wife, Ingrid, 56.

Their 15-year-marriage came to an end when Mrs Tarrant hired private detectives to investigate her husband over suspicions he was being unfaithful. The broadcaster was eventually caught with primary school deputy head Fiona McKechnie, 50. The divorce settlement saw his former wife awarded almost half of a £25 million fortune.

Today (Monday March 16) a spokesman for the TV star confirmed the arrest but said: "We have no further comment other than to say that Mr Tarrant was released without charge."

Tarrant made light of his arrest today when he faced the media outside his home in Esher. He spoke briefly to reporters as he drove away from the house, describing the incident as "a drunken row".

He confirmed he had not been charged.
