“It is only a matter of time before AFC Wimbledon and MK Dons are drawn to play each other, whether in a league or cup competition.”

That obvious statement was written by the Wimbledon Guardian nearly a year ago, when we launched our campaign for Milton Keynes Dons Football Club to drop the ‘Dons’ from their name.

But few would have predicted that the prospect of AFC Wimbledon and MK Dons meeting for the first time would re-emerge so quickly, after they were drawn to play each other in the Second Round of the FA Cup.

When we launched the Drop the Dons campaign in January, we hoped and believed everyone associated with MK Dons would see how much the name change would mean to AFC Wimbledon supporters.

While former Wimbledon FC fans will never forgive nor forget how the club was sold and relocated to Milton Keynes, the gesture would recognise that Wimbledon once again has a team nicknamed Dons.

The campaign is supported by many Wimbledon FC legends, including Chris Perry, John Scales, Marcus Gayle and Alan Kimble.

Even Dean Holdsworth, a star striker who became a coach when the club moved to Milton Keynes, said MK dropping the Dons would be “fantastic for Wimbledon”.

Our petition has attracted thousands of signatures and has been debated in the House of Commons, received national media coverage and been the talk of fans forums up and down the country.

Wimbledon Times: Drop the dons bumper sticker

But – now that AFC Wimbledon, with its own remarkable 10-year history, is now in the Football League and only one tier below MK Dons – a possible first encounter between the team this month could be just the first of many matches in the coming years.

So we are calling on all fans of football justice to help us renew our calls for MK to drop the Dons.

Sign our petition and tell your friends and family to support the campaign.

Write to your member of Parliament and ask them to sign the Early Day Motion, kindly proposed by Mitcham and Morden MP, Siobhain McDonagh.

For those of you attending Kingsmeadow on Monday to watch AFC Wimbledon take on York in the FA Cup, we will be handing out DROP THE DONS stickers and asking you to sign the petition if you haven’t already done so.
