It was with a little amusement that I read about the visit to the Fair Green area of Mitcham by Boris Johnson (Boris goes walkabout in town, December 25) to see how the money that had been given to Merton Council had been spent to improve the area.

I am sure there is no surprise to many people about his reaction.  There is little to been seen in actual visual evidence of how this money has done anything.

Sure the lovely clock tower has gone now for repair and refurbishment, but what is left is the same old Mitcham Fair Green that looks as if little care is taken of it.  There was rubbish around, the market looked its usual ramshackle mess and there was the usual groups of people just sitting around drinking in our Controlled Drinking Zone.

I actually took the time to speak to Boris himself and explained about the problem that will be caused by bringing back a two way bus lane through the area and especially between the area between the two public houses.  The noise and pollution that will be funnelled through this narrow area will be a great problem to the residential accommodation above the shops.  Boris took great concern of this information, and as your article mentioned was going to raise this issue with TFL later that day.

Hopefully, some notice will be taken of the waste of money that has gone on and the problem that the bus lane will cause.
