As councillors, we are receiving increased reports about dog-related problems in Merton’s public places (Dog Discipline, September 25). Most dog owners and dog walkers behave responsibly but the council must tackle the minority that don’t.

Residents’ concerns about people walking multiple dogs for commercial purposes are widespread.  They will be relieved that the council has finally agreed to restrict the number of dogs walked by an individual.

But it is crucial that any new bylaws are applied consistently across the borough. This must also include Morden Park, which is a significant open space in the borough straddling Cannon Hill, Lower Morden and St Helier wards.

It is regrettable that it has taken so long for Labour to take action on this issue. The council’s consultation took place in 2012 yet Labour has sat on the report for two years hoping the problem would go away.

Merton Conservatives remain committed to ensuring that the council protects and enhances all our wonderful green spaces and will continue to work with residents and Friends groups to achieve this.
