I am very concerned about the report in the Wimbledon Guardian (Taken to the Cleaners, September 4th) that alleges that a private repairs company has been overcharging Circle Housing Merton Priory systematically and consequently damaging the interests of residents and increasing service charges for leaseholders.
The allegations are also of repeated inefficiency and disorganisation.
It is clear that Merton's previous Tory administration handed over all our estates to CHMP without putting sufficient safeguards in place to ensure a quality repairs service.
During the last year there have been repeated problems with repairs that I and other councillors have complained about.
Circle Housing have given assurances that problems with contractors were being resolved, though it is clear from what residents are saying, that that has not happened.
Now, with these serious allegations of overcharging, I believe that as a matter of urgency, there should be an independent investigation into the operation of the contract between Circle Housing and this private repair company: with the resulting report being published.
I have asked Circle Housing to initiate an independent audit of that contract, so that no stone is left unturned and any continuing problems with repairs are resolved through immediate appropriate action.
