Whoever in Merton traffic and highways department thought that the removal of the yellow box system at the junction of Wimbledon Hill Road and Alexandra Road was in any way a good idea has clearly never tried to negotiate this drivers’ nightmare at busy times of day.
Vehicles of all sizes regularly block the way of oncoming traffic when the traffic lights change, causing completely unnecessary hold-ups and frayed tempers, and doubtless occasional accidents, when narrow escape routes are sought.
Of course all drivers should employ common sense in these situations but unfortunately this is often not the case. A simple box junction system is all that’s required and worked perfectly well in the past, so why on earth dispense with it? The introduction of a diagonal pedestrian crossing is of dubious benefit and hardly preferable to the traffic chaos we currently experience, which actually encourages pedestrians to dodge through the slow-moving traffic risking life and limb.
Is it too much to ask that the local authority takes a common-sense approach to a maddening and potentially dangerous problem which could so easily be solved? I live in hope!
