I was interested to read the article on the state of Merton’s streets.

I am constantly complaining about the litter and fly tipping in our area which has got worse over the years and is now at an all time low.

Walking from the Merton/Kingston boundary near B&Q to Shannon corner, into Burlington Road then on to West Barnes Lane down to the junction with Coombe Road, there is litter in gutters, on the pavements, in the grounds of commercial properties e.g. Tesco’s and the shops in Burlington Road, Raynes Park High School and apartment blocks.

It is also strewn in bushes alongside the road on Network Rail property and this is especially bad at Motspur Park Station.

I understand some of the Council’s problems i.e. people shouldn’t drop litter , household rubbish left out in thin bin bags is often ripped open by foxes and cats and the Council itself has had budget cuts but surely Merton has a responsibility to keep the streets clean?

We should, however, all play our part.

Owners of commercial properties should be responsible for keeping the front of their premises clean and Head Teachers of the various schools should ensure students keep their grounds and premises clean.

Cllr Mary-Jane Jeanes has been working very hard in this ward to try and get something done.

The example we are setting our children is clear - litter breeds litter and if this problem is not brought under control people treat the situation as “normal”.

At the moment the borough’s street cleaning is not fit for purpose.

It really is unacceptable.
