Whilst driving through Richmond Park this week, I was watching a lady who looked like she must have been in her seventies cycle with grit and determination up one of the deadly hills in the park.

She was going for it and Michael and I were cheering her on emphatically until we saw an impatient driver almost mow her down because he couldn’t wait 20 seconds for her to reach the top in order to overtake her safely.

We were so cross.

I mean, what was the point?

At least she was wearing her helmet and just focused on what she needed to do to try and stay safe.

Some of you may know I started cycling this year, and one of the main fears I’ve always had (which hasn’t made the experience as enjoyable as it could be) is the relationship between motorist and cyclist.

Now don’t get me wrong, there are some silly nincompoops in both camps as I’ve seen confrontation from both sides, but come on, let’s start looking out for each other.

Safety on the road is imperative and keeping a cool head is a necessity.

This weekend coming is a big one for me.

I’ve set myself another challenge and I’m hoping I’ll have lots of patient, thoughtful drivers en route today, as I attempt to ride 220 miles in a day for charity.

This is something I’ve chosen to do and some may think it too big a challenge for someone with so little experience on a bike as I’ve had, but I couldn’t say no.

My motivation is raising money for the charity ‘Ambitious about Autism’ and having seen the impact autism has in my own family, I really wanted to do it.

I’ll probably be in the saddle the best part of eighteen hours, maybe more, starting at the crack of dawn and finishing late.

I’ve had a check list of things to sort.

Front lights? Check. Back lights? Check. Chamois cream? Check. Mental strength? Hopefully it’s a check!

So wish me luck and please support if you can.
