Victorious Cardiff Blues hooker, Gareth Williams was on hand to present end of season awards to the boys at Reeds Weybridge Rugby Club last week at a charity fundraising evening, hosted by BBC sports commentator John Inverdale, in aid of Surrey-based charity Money for Milk.

Williams, whose Cardiff Blues team won the Amlin Challenge Cup final against Toulon on Sunday, presented awards to boys in each of the club’s year group sections from Under 13 to Under 16 and is pictured here with BBC TV Sports presenter, John Inverdale.

Money for Milk was set up by a group of parents at Reeds Weybridge in September 2009 following a visit by the club’s Under 15’s to South Africa.

During the tour, boys and parents visited Baphumelele Orphanage in the township of Khayelitscha, outside Cape Town. Deeply moved by their visit to the orphanage which cares for 150 children from babies to 16, many of whom are HIV-positive, the group organised a collection on the coach and raised about £300 to give to the orphanage.

“We discovered this money was going to pay for that month’s milk bill”, says event organiser Jes Isaacs. “When we came back to the UK, we decided to create a more permanent legacy and set up Money for Milk which aims to raise enough money to keep paying Baphumelele’s milk bill.

Last week’s successful fundraising evening will now enable us to apply for full charity-status and we are particularly grateful to our sponsors Nestle and Edwin Doran for supporting us.”

2/ The awards evening was supported by 350 parents and children from Reeds Weybridge U13s, U14s, U15s and U16s and marked the end of a highly successful rugby season in the Surrey League for boys at the club which will be playing in Division One for the fifth consecutive season this year. Reeds Weybridge, is based at Whiteley Village near Weybridge and Walton.
