Hill: Richmond have the fight to survive

Wimbledon Guardian: On the attack: Richmond director of rugby Steve Hill On the attack: Richmond director of rugby Steve Hill

Director of rugby Steve Hill has insisted Richmond will not curb their attacking instincts as the threat of relegation looms.

Injury-ravaged Richmond currently find themselves in the National Division  One bottom three, having won only three games this term after Saturday’s 34-26 defeat at Fylde.

But Hill has vowed to stick by his men as they bid to beat the drop.

“Each player stepped up to the mark at a ground where in the past we have been soundly beaten,” he said ahead of Saturday’s visit of Loughborough Students.

“Losing hurts but the whole squad should be proud of the effort, heart and skill displayed.

“These qualities will see us through this tough season.

“It’s frustrating we did not come away with any  points.

“If we had come away with one or two losing points that would have been good.

“But the positive thing is  if we continue to play with that ambition, spirit and commitment then we will get the results.”

Tom Platt’s third minute try and three Rob Kirby penalties ensured Richmond only trailed Fylde 22-14 at the break.

Tries from Afalobi Okeshola and Chris Davies – – converted by Rob Kirby, –  matched scores from the hosts in the second half, but they could not close the eight point deficit.

Richmond’s lengthy injury list forced Hill to hand debuts to Rowan Halsall, Jack Franklin and Edward Stembridge and the rugby director reckoned that was a reason to be cheerful.

“Jack Franklin is an example of someone coming all the way through a club he joined when he was six years old, and now has made his first-team debut,” added Hill, left.

“These days players move away for different reasons, but it’s encouraging to see them coming through.”
