Good start: Will Browne opened the scoring for Richmond against Macclesfield but the day would end in defeat

Richmond went down 17-15 at home to Macclesfield's last-minute try and touchline conversion in National League One.

The hosts fatally failed to convert scoring opportunities during the second half and ultimately paid the price for not finishing off the plucky visitors.

Richmond opened the scoring after a series of quick rucks saw full back Tom Platt’s excellently timed pass put the ever busy Will Browne in to score.

Macclesfield fly half Tom Eaton scored a penalty, which was quickly followed by a try by Matt Rhodes after some sloppy blindside Richmond defending.

Richmond drew level just before half time when instead of kicking for goal they kicked for the corner, won the lineout ball and eventually muscled their way over with openside Steve Wood securing the try.

The second half saw Richmond immediately pile on the pressure - number eight JP Attlee made a great break into the Macclesfield 22m area but a dropped pass with the line beckoning let the visitors off the hook.

Scrum half Henry Taylor began to find gaps around the fringes of the visitor's defence but the scoring pass eluded the home team.

Richmond had enough opportunities to extend their lead but indifferent decision making and gritty defence kept Macclesfield in the game.

An unnecessary penalty allowed the visitors to kick to the corner but the Richmond pack defended the catch and drive.

However, from the resulting scrum the Macclesfield backs belatedly adjusted positions and caught the home defence napping with winger Matt King going over to score - Eaton became the hero with his touchline conversion.

After this weekend's international break, Richmond travel to Tynedale.
