London Welsh head coach Lyn Jones was always confident it would only be a matter of time before the Exiles registered a historic first Premiership win.

Welsh recovered from 14-0 down to beat Exeter Chiefs 25-24 at the Kassam Stadium on Sunday with Ed Jackson's late try and Seb Jewell's conversion securing the win at the death.

It meant Jones' men avoided a third straight defeat following losses to Leicester Tigers and champions Harlequins and lifted the Exiles off the foot fo the table.

"We’re delighted not just with the result but the performance was lot better, a lot more competitive," said Jones.

"But we didn’t fold, we stuck in there, we fought back. The players showed really good character and just pinched it.

"Every dog has its day and today was our day. We’ve just got to saviour the moment and use it to build and grow."

"If we’d had another 30 point defeat then it’s difficult to pick confidence up.

"We’ve been measuring our games against Harlequins and Leicester and seeing and understanding what needs to be done to improve.

"It’s just time; people need time to gel and to grow.

"We don’t really know where we are - we’ve got some players who haven’t been in England for four weeks, let alone London Welsh players.

"It’s just trying to get everybody integrated. What was important was that we selected the same team that played against Quins, and grew as a team.

"Winning is really helpful in building confidence and we need to keep on learning."

Welsh now face a five-day turnaround before travelling to the Salford City Stadium to take on Sale Sharks on Friday night.

Jones added: "We had a five-day turnaround against Quins and it didn’t help, but we prepare for it.

"This week will all be about getting on the field on Friday night as healthy and as fresh as we possibly can."
