Peter Lydon nailed his second touchline conversion in consecutive weeks to give London Scottish victory over arch rivals London Welsh at Old Deer Park, writes Oli Shapley.

Lydon held his nerve to land a 19-17 triumph after Tinus du Plessis had dived over in the corner to finally break a resolute Welsh defence.

Martyn Thomas had given Welsh an early lead in the first half before a brace from Scottish captain Mark Bright brought Scottish right back into it.

Stretching for it: The London Welsh lineout was tested in windy conditions at Old Deer Park on Saturday

Alex Woolford burrowed over from close range to give Welsh a half-time lead and this is how it would remain until the final minute.

On a very windy day in Richmond, Scottish began the match looking to complete a fourth win on the bounce in all competitions.

Loose: London Welsh's Rayn Hodson hauls in a wayward off-load against London Scottish on Saturday

They got off to the worst possible start when they were made to pay for some sloppy cover defence, failing to deal with a chip and chase from Thomas, who gratefully collected the loose ball and dived over in the corner, Olly Barkley added the extras.

With Scottish struggling to deal with the wind and their scrum not functioning, the home side continued to assert themselves in the early part of the game pushing further in front when Barkley slotted a long penalty goal to give Welsh a 10-0 lead.

International quality: Former England fly half Olly Barkley was in action at Old Deer Park on the same day England beat Scotland to lift the Calcutta Cup at Murrayfield

However, the force of the wind was causing havoc for both sides and a clearance kick from Welsh winger Josh Drauniniu gifted Scottish precious ball in the oppositions 22.

This gave Scottish a platform to power back into the game and Bright was the man to finish off a well-constructed driving maul with 27 minutes on the clock.

Scottish were growing in confidence and they ran the ball superbly from the kick off earning themselves yet another penalty which was kicked to the corner.

The visitors set up another driving maul but this time failed to cross the line, however, Bright was on hand to roll round the corner and score his second try of the match.

Slippery: London Scottish's Robbie Fergusson on the run at Old Deer Park

Peter Lydon slotted the conversion from a tough angle right of the posts to put Scottish in front.

With the game edging towards half-time, a period of Welsh pressure resulted in Woolford burrowing over from close range.

Key moment: London Scottish back rower Tinus Du Plessis scored late to level matters at Old Deer Park

Barkley added the conversion to give Welsh a 17-12 lead at the break.

Scottish came out after the break with the wind now firmly in their favour, looking to close what appeared to be a very manageable gap.

Unfortunately the line-out appeared to suffer from a minor malfunction early in the second half preventing Scottish from taking full advantage of good field position.

With 20 minutes left on the clock Scottish were denied a scoring opportunity when Chris Elder deliberately knocked on a pass from Freddie Clarke resulting in a yellow card for Elder, who was joined in the bin by Rob Lewis for a high tackle during the same move.

Scottish were becoming increasingly frustrated as they continued to waste good attacking positions, failing to capitalise on their two-man advantage.

Finishing touch: Peter Lydon kicked the winning points for a second successive week for London Scottish

With the away side looking destined for defeat, quick hands from Scottish out wide allowed Du Plessis to squeeze in at the corner to level the game up at 17-17 apiece.

Peter Lydon then stepped up to send the ball spiralling through the uprights, leading to wild celebrations from the travelling fans.
