London Scottish’s dynamic duo
Matt Williams has revealed switching to London Scottish was about getting more opportunities to score more tries.
The 25-year-old Moseley winger penned a two-year deal at the Athletic Ground this week, where he will team up with the Championship’s leading try scorer Miles Mantella.
Former England sevens man Williams, who scored 13 times himself this term, was not short of suitors, but it was the chance to increase his try tally and set down some roots in London that attracted him to the exiles.
“I have been a bit of a nomad in the past few years, Doncaster, Bristol, Birmingham and it’s now time to put down some roots – I always wanted to do that in London,” he said.
“They have got big plans for the next few years with a new stand and ambitions to become an established top four team.
“It will be nice to start that journey with them rather than go to a club that is already up there regularly.
“The way a team plays is also a factor. Being the type of winger I am I need a team to complement my skill-set.
“The club play a good brand of rugby with Miles Mantella and Mark Bright scoring lots of tries this season.
“Being a winger, the first question you get asked is how many tries you scored and it would be nice to be up there next season along with Miles at the top of the scoring charts.”
Mantella scored in Saturday’s 55-31 defeat to Bristol for his 18th and 19th try of a season that has seen head coach James Buckland lead the exiles to a fifth-placed finish.
The Athletic Ground chief has challenged the 24-year-old to back up that form next term and the former Harlequins youngster would be only too happy to oblige.
Mantella said: “If you had given me 19 tries at the beginning of the season I would have definitely taken that.
“I have had more game time and responsibility this year, which I believe has improved me. I am extremely happy to be staying and having an even better season next year.”
