Stand-off Dan Newton aims to put last weekend’s B&I Cup exit behind him on Saturday when London Scottish return to Championship action against Cornish Pirates, writes Andy Weston.

The Scots let slip an 18-3 advantage, eventually losing 21-18 to London Welsh at the Athletic Ground last Saturday, which allowed Pontypridd to pip them to a last eight spot in the final round of B&I Cup matches.

Scottish turn their attentions back to league duty on Saturday when they host sixth placed Pirates who are one place below them in the league.

In what’s proving to be an incredibly tight race for the end of season play-offs, Newton, who starts ahead of Lee Millar this weekend, knows a win is vital to remain in touch with the top four sides.

He said: “It was a disappointing result against Welsh but we have no move on, concentrate on the league and try and land that top four place.

“It’s such a tight league that one defeat against Bedford in New Year’s Day saw us drop from fifth to second.

“But we are still very positive and are looking for a good win and a good performance on Saturday.

“You are always going to have disappointing performances throughout a season, it’s how you bounce back.

“We talked about what went wrong on Saturday and have tried to put that right in training this week.”

He continued: “Pirates are a good side, well organised defensively and in Gavin Cattle they have got an experienced scrum-half who marshals them very well.

“Hopefully, we will get our attacking game back firing because it let us down against London Welsh.”

Meanwhile, former Scotland international Chris Paterson dropped in on first team training at London Scottish earlier this week.

The 109-capped Paterson spent time working with stand-offs Dan Newton and Lee Millar during Monday’s training session.

Newton said: “It was great having him down at the club.

“We worked on kicking techniques and counter-attacking play and the small tips he gave us can make a big difference in a game situation.”
