Weybridge Vandals skipper Tony Couzens has warned London Division Three South West rivals Old Wellingtons his side might have a point to prove when the two teams meet on the opening day of the season.

The Brownacres outfit kick-off their campaign on September 15 having secured survival last season with a 17-10 final day win over Old Alleynians.

At the same time Old Wellingtonians were missing out on promotion by a solitary point.

And Couzens cannot wait to get started, with promotion and success in the cups topping the agenda.

“Old Wellingtonians are always a team to look out for,” he said.

“Some freak results at the end of last season meant they missed out on promotion and kept us up so I guess we owe them one.

“Promotion is always the target for us. We have got a young mobile side who are all a year older and wiser after last season.

“There’s a lot of positivity among the squad.

“We are going to commit more to the cups this season.

“Last year we didn’t have the resources but this time we’ll go for it.”

Head coach Nick Ridley will have the services of Oxford University full-back Cassian Bramham-Law for the entire campaign, while centre Bill Painter is back in the fold after being sidelined for two years with a back problem.

But it is up front where Couzens believes his men will again have the edge.

“I think we have the pack to beat again this year and with players like Cassian in the backs we’re aiming for more rounded performances,” he said.
