Sutton & Epsom Rugby Club coach Jeff Parsons is enjoying being four points clear at the top of London Two South West, but he admits to still being nervous on Friday nights before games.

Sutton sit pretty at the divisional summit after a 44-24 win at Dover on Saturday.

However, Parsons was missing seven first team regulars and lost a further two to injury early in the game.

It means Parsons cannot be certain who will turn up for training and who will start the games, and while the second string players who have come in have started well, the coach says there are tougher tests to come.

He said: “It’s all going according to plan, but we are being very unlucky with injuries at the moment.

“We have seven or eight first team players out and even on Saturday, we lost Mike Blakeburn to a hamstring and Phil Williams was involved in a car crash on the way to Dover and although he started, he was too shaken up to play.

“But that shows our luck at the moment. I cannot deny that I still get nervous on a Friday night before games, you just don’t know what is going to turn up.”

Parsons praised the overall commitment of his players saying they all wanted to stay and work hard over the summer after last year’s disappointing season that ended in relegation.

But he added: “I would feel more comfortable if we were winning by bigger margins, but it is not only us who are putting out inconsistent sides.

“Look at Camberley, we put 70-odd past them two weeks’ ago and then they beat KCS Old Boys last weekend.”

Parsons’ injury list includes Adam Blissett, Austin Shepherd, Pete Matthews, Ian Knott, Andy Nichols, Sam Hurley, Blakeburn and Williams.

He was also without Simon Day on Saturday due to work commitments.

However, the side stepping in were still too strong for Dover where Steve Warnham starred  with a try and 19 points off his boot.

Michael Cartledge, Shawn Renwick, James Caddy and Charlie Purvis added the tries which keeps up Sutton’s 100 per cent record.

Sutton take on second-placed Old Tottonians in two weeks, after a home tie against Warlingham in the Intermediate Cup on Saturday.
