Winger Sam Smith might be in the middle of a long try-scoring farewell to Harlequins fans and is out to add a trophy as the perfect leaving present.

The 23-year-old, who featured in Friday’s thrilling 24-20 triumph over Leicester Tigers, will leave the Stoop at the end of the season to switch to Championship-bound Worcester Warriors.

Director of rugby Conor O’Shea has urged his departing players to match Gonzalo Camacho’s match winning sign off in the Amlin Cup final three years ago and leave the club as Stoop legends.

Camacho scored in the dying minutes against Stade Francais in 2011 to give fly half Nick Evans the chance of kicking his side to the title – which he duly took.

And while Smith, who is likely to feature in Friday’s Amlin Cup semi-final at Northampton Saints, is not specifically out to make a name for himself he would like to go out on a high.

“We’re still in the running and it is now up to us to stay in a competition we want to win,” he said.

“I’ll miss it. It is a great club and a great group of lads. The atmosphere was awesome and the fans were great on Friday.

“I just hope we can get some silverware before the end of the season.

“We’re not in a final yet. We’ve got to keep working hard. We are the form team of the Premiership and if we can get ourselves into a final we’ve got every chance of coming away with a win.”

He added: “We’ve won a trophy in each of the last three seasons and learnt how to win the big games and when we need to dig in.

“We have a good record at Franklin’s Gardens in recent seasons and hopefully, we can take the experience of the Leicester win into the Amlin Cup and go on and win another.”

O’Shea added: “Sam has been a brilliant, brilliant professional for us.

“Players leave, but the time you have in the jersey is what counts.

“It is the memories you leave that make you a legend and Gonzalo will always be remembered by Quins fans.

“Sam has achieved a lot with the club and it would be lovely to see him go out the same way.”
Smith ends his spell at the Stoop when he moves to Sixways, where he is likely to be part of a team bidding for promotion.

He goes with a wealth of experience under his belt having learnt his trade alongside the likes of Mike Brown, Ugo Monye and Tom Williams in the back three.

And he is excited about treading the same path that trio followed back to the Premiership under Dean Richards in 1996.

“It will be an exciting time,” he added.

“A lot of clubs have gone down, rebuilt and come straight back up. Obviously, Harlequins did it years ago.

“I’m really excited about being part of something like that.

“Dean Ryan knows what he is doing and hopefully
we can get quickly in pre-season.

“I’ve learnt a lot from Brownie, Ugo and Tom, hopefully I can take that and quite a lot of big game experience with me.

“I haven’t even thought about playing against them yet.”
