Sutton & Epsom overpowered London Division One South strugglers Haywards Heath in a 64-7 rout at Rugby Lane.

Shawn Renwick helped himself to three tries in the first 20 minutes and prop Raynn Bruce opened his account for the club with a diving effort from close range.

The visitors, without a win so far this season, stuck to their task well and scored a converted try after 26 minutes when Roscoe Atkins followed up a kick and scored with the help of the goal post.

But Guy Stuckey-Clarke showed his pace to add Sutton’s fifth try and Tariq Al Khaldi also scored his first try for the club just before half time.

Sam Hurley had converted five of the six tries, to give Sutton a very comfortable 40-7 lead at half time.

A number of injuries meant the home side had to make changes in the second half, but that did not halt their momentum as replacement Jamie Green added the seventh try early in the second half, and a few minutes later Mike Blakeburn galloped down the left wing for his first try of the season.

Renwick went over for his fourth try and Blakeburn added his second with 10 minutes remaining.

The match ultimately was a clinical display by Sutton & Epsom, although some complacency set in during the second half.

The pack was in complete control all afternoon both in the scrums and at the lineout, while the driving maul was employed regularly to good effect.

Sutton & Epsom coach, Jeff Parsons, had identified this game, as well as Saturday’s trip to Beckenham, as crucial with Sutton seeking to consolidate their current mid-table position.

Beckenham occupy the third relegation place, and with Sutton currently 18 points ahead of them with seven games to play, a win for Sutton is likely to guarantee London Division One South rugby next season.
