Wimbledon Hockey Club’s Alastair Brogdon was on the scoresheet for GB yesterday (Sunday) as they beat India 5-1 in the World Hockey League.

The heavy victory in Belgium sealed a third place finish and confirmed GB’s place in the World League finals in India in November and the Rio Olympics.

Brogdon and club-mates Henry Weir, Michael Hoare and James Bailey had lost 3-1 to Australia on Friday to send themselves in to the third place play-off with India.

On the scoresheet for the Kookaburras was Wimbledon hot-shot Blake Govers, and he and team-mates went on to win the final against the hosts by a solitary goal.

GB head coach Bobby Crutchley said: “It was a very good performance. Considering it’s the last game of a really tough tournament, to play with that intensity and control the game like that is very good. I’m proud of the players. It’s nice to finish with a big win and it’s our best display in a long time.

“We created chances well and we showed we have the players capable of causing teams problems. We were brave and aggressive in attack but really disciplined in defence, we didn’t give them a lot of chances.”

He added: “We want to win these tournaments and although we qualified for Rio we wanted to be in the final here. We have a big challenge to get on a par with teams like Australia, but we’re certainly heading the right way.”
