Alan Forsyth could be the latest Surbiton hockey star to secure Team GB honours.

The 22-year-old Scotland international has been in fine form for the Sugden Road outfit this term as head coach Todd Williams' men have surged to the summit of the MHL Premier Division table.

Team GB selectors were faces in the crowd when Forsyth helped inspire Surbiton to a 3-3 draw with East Grinstead last week, having trailed 2-0 at one stage.

He was not able to get on the scoresheet on Sunday as goals from Nick Cooper (2), former GB international Matt Daly (2) and Jonny Gall accounted for Men’s Cup semi-final opponents Cannock 5-0 in the league.

The Surbiton men’s squad do not have any current GB internationals in their team, while the club’s ladies had Hollie Webb and Georgie Twigg on duty for Great Britain during a 2-0 series win over Spain in Valencia this week.

But Williams is confident 10-goal Forsyth – who already has more than 50 caps for his country, including appearances at two Commonwealth Games – is knocking on the door for a GB call up and believes he has what it takes to make the step up.

“Not only has Alan scored a lot of goals this season, but is scoring important goals for us,” said the coach, who takes his men to derby rivals Wimbledon today.

“I was pleased the GB coaches were at the East Grinstead game because they will have seen his ability to really influence games.

“He is fitter than he has ever been and he loves scoring goals.

“He would bump an U13 player out of the way just to get on the scoresheet himself.

“There are not enough determined goalscorers like him around and I hope he gets his chance.”

Goals from Twigg, Julia King and Sandra Frankland secured Surbiton Ladies a 3-1 win at Buckingham on Saturday.

It booked the unbeaten league leaders their place in the WHL Premier Divison play-offs with five games still to play.

A 2-0 win over Oxford Hawks on Sunday bagged a Women’s Cup semi-final trip to Loughborough Students in March.
