Kingston’s Darcie Mead became a double English alpine ski champion this week.
The 18-year-old claimed the giant slalom title in Italy on Monday – despite finishing second to Scotland’s Cara Brown – to go with the slalom title she claimed on Sunday night.
And Mead felt she could have been celebrating an overall win had she not changed tact in the second of her two longer runs in Bormio.
“I felt like I had a really smooth first run," said Mead of her GS success.
"I wasn’t rushing or panicking and in the second run I changed my tactics, I tried to attack, but maybe a bit too much.
"Cara was only a 10th ahead of me after the first run, so I think I was just trying to go for it, but the risk didn’t really pay off.
"I am still happy with the result though. I was 14th seed, so I didn’t expect to be in the top three, so I’m really happy.”
