Surbiton Ladies were named GoFest team of the year at the Surrey Sports Awards on Tuesday to honour last season’s Investec Women's Hockey League championship and Women’s Cup double winning campaign.

Coach Brett Garrard collected the Active Surrey coach of the year award at the ceremony held at Kempton Park racecourse after collecting the same honours at the Elmbridge Sports Awards last month.

Surbiton, skippered by England international Sarah Haycroft, became the first team to secure the championship and cup double after a convincing 7-1 win over South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division One runners-up, Hampstead & Westminster.

Awards organiser Active Surrey's Suzie Wall said: “This has been yet another huge year in UK sport.

"Our county was represented well at the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow which once again demonstrates the high-calibre sporting personalities Surrey can develop.

"I would like to congratulate all our winners and nominees on their wonderful achievements this year.

"The awards ceremony rewards quality, achievement, determination and commitment to those involved in sport across the county.

"Hearing their stories was truly inspirational and they are a credit to their sports and themselves.

"I hope that the winners, and of course all of those shortlisted, use this as a platform to push-on and strike gold throughout 2015.”

Surbiton Ladies go into 2015 with their three point lead at the top of the Investec WHL Premier Division intact, after winning 2-0 at Reading on Sunday.

Leading scorer Rebecca Herbert, right, scored her 10th goal of the season to give Surbiton a 48th minute lead, before Jo Hunter added the second with four minutes left to secure the win  – despite losing players to the sin-bin for a total of 11 minutes.

Meanwhile, men's head coach Todd Williams hailed Alan Forsyth and Matt Daly after the pair gave Surbiton a 2-0 win at Reading on Saturday.

Forsyth and Daly took their respective goal hauls to nine and 17 for the season as the Sugden Road outfit closed the gap on MHL Premier Division leaders East Grinstead to one point ahead of the winter break.

“It illustrates just how good a penalty scorer Matt is and how good a natural scorer Alan is,” said Williams.

“Alan has that one touch finish that any team would love to have.

“He’s strong and aggressive and there’s a good chance an attack will end up in the net.”
