Richmond Canoe Club’s Lizzie Broughton was simply relieved to finish as she won silver at the ICF Canoe marathon World Championships in Oklahoma last Sunday.
Broughton pushed Hungarian Renata Csay all the way to the line but was not quite strong enough to claim gold.
“I’m really pleased. It is the first time I have raced K1 so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect,” she said.
“It takes many hours of practice on the water at Richmond to get here and I think it will mean quite a lot to the club.
“It was quite a relief to finish and get it done.”
Broughton claimed the World Cup series crown two days later.
