(Leeds won 6-5 on penalties)John Terry's presence could not prevent Chelsea crashing out of the FA Cup at the fifth-round stage in a dramatic penalty shoot-out at Imber Court on Sunday.

The England skipper saw Lizzie Edwards' wonder goal put the Blues in the driving seat in the second-half of extra time, but Amanda Barr levelled just 60 seconds later.

Stand-in Leeds keeper Emma Higgins then saved Dunia Susi's sudden-death spot-kick, leaving England international Sue Smith to dump the Blues out.

With star players Casey Stoney and Eniola Aluko missing through suspension, reshuffled Chelsea were in trouble in the first minute.

Mel Sutcliffe cut through the hosts' rearguard like butter only for Siobhan Chamberlain to palm away her drive.

However, Danni Buet did Aluko's number 10 shirt justice when she set up Ellen White and Higgins was relieved to see the shot bobble narrowly wide.

At the other end, Smith and Barr were a constant threat for United and after Smith danced through the Chelsea defence, Barr just failed to hit the target from the resulting cross.

Buet showed her own party tricks when she skipped past two Leeds challenges and picked out White in the box, but the striker saw her header bounce harmlessly away.

Leeds almost took the lead on half time when Smith cut loose only for her shot to rebound off the post and n an uninspiring second half, the visitors again came closest to breaking the deadlock when Smith's free-kick caught Chelsea napping, but Chamberlain safely gathered the unmarked Steph Houghton's shot.

White could then have opened the scoring for Chelsea in the first period of extra time when sub Emma Whitter caused havoc in the Yorkshire side's defence, only for the England U19 to volley the ball far and wide.

The Chelsea faithful were finally rewarded two minutes into the second period of extra time.

Edwards had already tested Higgins with a 30-yard dipping strike but went one better just a minute later when she unleashed an unstoppable 35-yarder that sailed over the helpless keeper.

The still-celebrating Chelsea side were immediately punished for switching off when Barr powered down the left and delight turned to despair when her cross-cum-shot took a slight deflection and went in off the woodwork.

In the dreaded shoot-out, White's penalty hit the post without the same reward, but Chamberlain saved Houghton's kick to keep it 4-4.

There was a heart-stopping moment when the Chelsea keeper appeared to have blocked Jessica Wright's fifth and final penalty, but the ball agonisingly crept over the line to send the tie into sudden death, leaving Susi and Smith to play out the final act.
