Sutton United boss Paul Doswell is gunning for the FA Trophy second round this weekend, hoping lady luck pays a visit.

United travel to Conference South rivals Hemel Hempstead Town on Saturday with Doswell in confident mood after a six-week spell of football that has left him purring, if cursing his luck.

His side are unbeaten in three games, including an FA Trophy win at Hereford United and a Senior Surrey Cup win at South Park.

The two victories sandwich last weekend’s 2-2 league draw at Basingstoke Town, which featured goals from Bedsente Gomis and Ricky Welland, pictured.

The league point is only United’s third in five games, but Doswell is still liking what he is seeing.

“I’ve not been unhappy with our football for the past six weeks,” he said.

“We played very well at Basingstoke, and could have won, but for hitting the woodwork.

“We’re unbeaten in three so we’re going in the right direction. I am worried that we’re going to run out of season before lady luck finally shines on us and we start getting the results we deserve.”

Callum Hart (dislocated shoulder) and Micky Spillane (back) did not finish the Basingstoke match, although Spillane was fit for the 4-1 win at South Park, which featured four Billy Medlock goals.

Doswell said: “Callum has had a remarkable escape. The physios managed to pop his should back in the socket and he did not suffer any significant damage to the bone or muscle.

“He’ll miss this weekend, but could be back for the Whitehawk game.”

Hemel go into the Trophy tie on the back of a 5-1 hammering of Staines Town.

Doswell said: “They have got some big players like Dennis Oli, and they are riding on the crest of a wave after beating Staines.

“But we’ve been training well this week, and it is up to us to knock them off that wave – and we’re confident we can do that, which is how it should be.”
