Met Police striker Tobi Alabi has confirmed he has quit football on medical grounds – aged only 19 years old.

The former Millwall academy star collapsed during a 7-1 friendly win over near neighbours Molesey earlier this month – an incident similar to  former Bolton Wanderers’ star Fabrice Muamba’s fight for life at White Hart Lane in 2012.

Alabi regained consciousness and was well enough to watch the rest of the match from the stands before heading to Darent Valley Hospital in Kent – close to where he lives in Erith – where he was admitted for treatment.

He was transferred to St Thomas’s Hospital in central London where he was diagnosed as suffering from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy – the same condition that almost claimed Muamba’s life.

“I’m distraught to have to inform you that I will be forced to retire from playing football due to a heart condition. Inconsolable,” said the former Hampton & Richmond Borough loanee on Twitter on Monday.

“I’m grateful for the experiences I’ve had, the wonderful people I have met and the lifelong friends I have made.”

Blues boss Jimmy Cooper added: “I am absolutely gutted for him. He is one of the nicest guys off the pitch.

“He always had a smile on his face and, like many others who play non-League football, he still had aspirations to play professional football.”

The Imber Court chief slammed his men for delivering a below-par performance in Saturday’s 1-1 Ryman Premier League draw at Carshalton Athletic, which came care of Charlie Collins’ spectacular opener.

“With the news on Tobi being so glum, it makes the performance at Carshalton all the more galling,” he fumed.

“The players who represented the club should hang their heads in shame and some of them should take a long hard look at themselves and see if they really want to be involved in football.

“If I’m honest, some were not bothered if we won, lost or drew.”

The Blues manager got the right reaction as his side won 2-1 at Billericay Town on Tuesday thanks to goals from Allan Tait and skipper Steve Sutherland.

Met Police travel to Hampton & Richmond Borough in the FA Trophy second qualifying round on Saturday.
