Leatherhead striker Greg Andrews has asked the Tanners fans to stay patient as they rediscover their goalscoring boots.

Andrews and his team mates started the season on fire banging in 16 goals in eight games, on the back of a pre-season tally of 19 goals in eight games.

However, since going out of the FA Cup last month, the Tanners have scored just five goals in five games, including one penalty and an own goal.

Moreover, Richard Brady’s men are second from bottom of the Ryman League Division One South – although such is the open nature of the division, winning their two games in hand would propel the Tanners to fourth.

Andrews said: “We can’t put our finger on why the goals have dried up. It’s one of those where no one really knows the answer. The problem is, the longer it goes on, the more of a problem it becomes.

“When you lose four on the bounce, the fans start moaning and getting on your back and when you’re not scoring goals, they really lay into you.

“I know they’re not happy but we’re not going out their to lose games and not score goals. It’ll take time.

“It’s still pretty early and I’m sure the goals will come again.”

Leatherhead lost 2-1 at home to Ramsgate over the weekend with Kevin Terry scoring the only goal.

Then on Tuesday, after a goaless 90 minutes, the Tanners were  knocked out of the League Cup by Carshalton Athletic.

Andrews, who has seven goals this season but only one penalty since the middle of September, said: “We’ve not played badly in the past two games, it’s just that the ball is not going into the net.

“Pre-season and the first few games of season were good and then it started going wrong. And if we’re not scoring and we’re letting in goals, then there is a problem.

“It’s not a blame game but you cannot blame the guys in defence getting annoyed that us boys up front are not getting the goals.”

He added: “Time was we’d concede a few goals but we were always good enough to score more than we had conceded.”

Leatherhead travel to Dulwich Hamlet on Saturday.
