Walton & Hersham boss Mark Hams has targeted six wins from the club’s remaining 19 Ryman Division One South games to secure survival, writes Stuart Amos.

The relegation threatened Swans were deducted three points and fined £100 on Christmas Eve for fielding an ineligible player in a 4-1 win over Whitstable Town on the season’s opening day.

It leaves Walton two points above the drop zone and without a win for the new manager in six attempts since he took charge.

The Stompond Lane chief agreed a temporary loan deal for Kingstonian youngster Brendan Murphy McVey this week and landed the services of former Corinthian Casuals livewire Michael Salako.

Good signing: Kingstonian youngster Brendan Murphy-McVey has shaken on a short term loan spell at Stompond Lane

The pair add to the arrival of Tooting’s Gareth Chendlik, Tonbridge Angels’ Charlie Slocombe and former Brentford youngster Rylan Myers in recent weeks.

Hams helped Elmbridge neighbours Walton Casuals to a record breaking highest league finish two seasons ago and has won the division as an assistant to Alan Dowson at Kingstonian.

And he is confident of finding the right formula.

“We are in a relegation battle and when I took over I told the board things will get worse before they get better,” he said.

“But we have 19 games to save the season. I wouldn’t have taken the job if there were only nine games to go.

Rich promise: Former Corinthian Casuals Michael Salako is a good addition to the Walton & Hersham set-up

“It is going to take time. We’ve made some changes and I have got to the bottom of who is here to fight and who is loyal to the previous manager.

“I’ve got a list of contacts as long as my arm, but we haven’t got the resources to bring them in.

“I will manufacture a team to stay in he division.

“I reckon we need five or six more wins to be sure of staying up and that is a third of the remaining games.

“We need get those points on the board sooner rather than later otherwise the pressure starts to build.”
