Sutton Common Rovers boss Darren Salmon still has Wembley in his sights after a remarkable night of FA Vase action at Gander Green Lane last week.

Rovers came from behind to lead Beckenham Town 2-1, only to be reduced to 10 men and then face the prospect of extra time after being hauled level in the 95th minute.

However, Rovers’ Richie Smith fired home the winner just seconds later to ensure a 3-2 win.

Their reward is a cheque for £1,000 and a trip to Eastbourne Town on December 12 for a place in the last 16.

Salmon said: “It was an absolutely amazing night.

“We’d not had the best of first halves. There was great support from the crowd, and we knew we were not playing to the levels we could.

“We had a chat at half-time, and we were much better after the break.

“To get 2-1 ahead was an excellent effort, especially with 10 men after we lost Richie Monan to two yellow cards, but then we had the stuffing knocked out of us with their late equaliser.

Down: Sutton Common Rovers went 1-0 down against Beckenham Town, before the real fun began

“We were not confident about going into extra-time and in truth I thought we were going out.”

He added: “No one knew where the injury time had come from anyway, but the Beckenham players celebrated a bit too heartily and the ref added a bit more time on.

“Our lads showed great composure from the restart, there was no hoofing it forward.

“They worked the space, and Richie took the goal so well, he did not snatch at it. It was such a turnaround, and we were so elated because we knew the tie was won.”

Striker Francois Gabbidon and Hamilton Antonio got the other goals.

Rovers followed up the win with a 2-1 win over Knaphill in the Premier Division of the Combined Counties League on Monday night.

Arnold Okiror and Gabbidon got the goals to lift Rovers to 17th in the table, and they travel to Westfield this weekend.
