Carshalton Athletic held their nerve to beat promotion-chasing Folkestone Invicta 5-3 on Saturday and make it eight wins from 10 home games.

The Robins raced into a two-goal lead through Sean O’Toole and Austin Gacheru, but the game then furiously swung back and forth before captain Adriano Moraes scored the fifth from the penalty spot in added time to calm any lingering nerves.

The win moved Carshalton up to 10th place in Ryman Division One South ahead of a clash against ninth-placed Chipstead this coming weekend, the first in a run of five straight away fixtures.

“We were a real force going forward in this one but we also gave away a couple of sloppy goals,” said forward Brendan Murphy-McVey, whom grabbed Carshalton’s third goal.

“We perhaps got a little too comfortable at 4-1 and we spoke after the game about the need to cut out lapses in concentration.”

The young forward took advantage of his first full start since November by also providing the corner which defender Jarrell Gray headed in to register his first ever goal in Robins red.

"It's been a slow recovery from an injury I picked up months ago but I've been working hard in training," Murphy-McVey said.

"There is a lot of competition in the squad for the forward positions so it felt good to score and get an assist, but even more so as they contributed to a good win."

Carshalton, in contrast to their impressive home form, are still seeking an elusive away win under manager Rob Scantlebury since he took charge last November.

"I think it'll happen sooner rather than later, we all believe in ourselves and are focused on pushing ourselves higher up the league table," added Murphy-McVey.

"Some of our more recent away performances have deserved more than they've yielded so we aren't lacking in confidence about our ability to turn our fortunes on the road around."
