Carshalton Athletic interim Ian Hazel praised his team’s desire to “never give up” as they progressed to the second round of the Surrey Senior Cup on last night.

The Robins eventually hit four without reply against a resilient Whyteleafe side, who matched their higher league opposition for a good hour, to set up an away tie at League Two outfit AFC Wimbledon.

“We knew we’d be in for a tough night because one look at their form this season tells you they’ve been doing well,” said Hazel.

“But the lads showed a great attitude and the only thing missing from the first-half was a goal to cap some of our approach play.”

Defender Paris Hamilton-Downes broke the deadlock on 65 minutes with his first senior goal for Carshalton, a feat later matched by substitutes David Bonsu and Ben Kudjodji, while Tommy Bradford grabbed his seventh of the season to make it 2-0 at the time.

“I’m delighted for all the goalscorers and Luke Pigden, who hit three assists upon his return from injury, but everyone played their part,” Hazel added.

“It’s never easy on players when a club goes through a change of management but their response has been right.

"We now have two wins and two clean sheets on the bounce and we must now carry that kind of form on into league games.”

Hazel welcomed back senior players Pigden and Quincy Rowe for Tuesday’s game and he hopes to have Alex Addai and Kieran Woodley also back in contention for the visit of Met Police this Saturday.
