Sutton boss happy to see duo showing strong heads

Sutton United boss Paul Doswell says Craig Watkins and Tom Kavanagh should be fit for the weekend despite both suffering head injuries in the 2-2 draw with Tonbridge Angels.

Watkins had to leave the pitch minutes after scoring his opening goal of the season when an errant elbow caught him in the face.

Doswell then lost Kavanagh in the closing stages when the midfielder was knocked out cold after another blow to the head.

Doswell said: “Both were complaining of headaches on Sunday and Monday, so they didn’t train.

“But we’ll see how they get on tonight (Thursday). They should both be fine.”

Watkins and Harry Ottoway had United 2-0 ahead with 20 minutes to go, but Angels fought back.

Doswell said: “I have no complaints. At 2-0, we should be winning, but I’ve watched their goals and there was nothing more the defence could have done.

"In previous games, we've conceded sloppy goals, goals that really annoyed me, but this time round, they were just good goals.”

United are unbeaten in five league games, with only one win, and they go to Eastbourne Borough on Saturday.

Doswell said: “We need to start a winning run, rather than continuing an unbeaten run.”
