You’ll never truly achieve perfection in football, but Sutton United came very close with an excellent performance and result against rivals Woking on Saturday.

The issue of a recent lack of goals was overcome in style with four of them, and indeed on another day United could have had seven or eight.

There’s no better way to celebrate your 500th game in charge than a convincing win against rivals and Paul Doswell will be particularly delighted; not just with the result, but also with the way his side played.

Every single player that set foot on the pitch put in a real shift, and some of the beautiful flowing football played at times showed just how well those players work as a team as well.

Some of United’s recent results have not reflected the ability and performances of the side so it’s nice to really have a solid performance vindicated with an excellent result.

It’s important now to get a good run of form going, especially with the upcoming FA Cup tie against Dan Wishart’s new club, Forest Green Rovers.

Losing Dan on Monday was no doubt a blow, but George McLennan looks like a wonderful acquisition and once match fit could prove to be just as effective on the left hand side.

The squad is looking particularly strong now with Cooper and McAllister back from their loan spells, and I don’t think any more comings or goings are likely.

With United now 12 points clear of the drop, focus should be towards pushing on towards the playoff positions.
