Walton Casuals goal hero Gabriel Odunaike enjoyed an Easter weekend to remember, although his manager could be forgiven for thinking otherwise.

The former Gillingham Town youngster guided his side to a 5-3 victory over Sittingbourne on Saturday, courtesy of a hat-trick in between goals from Scott Day and former AFC Wimbledon midfielder Jake Nicholson.

In doing so, he kicked off his afternoon by grabbing his 50th goal for the club before added to his tally in the second half, ensuring he overtook manager Anthony Gale in the all-time goalscoring charts.

Odunaike said: “I couldn’t have wished for more. When I was warming up for the game I thought I would try and get one, and before you know it they started to just roll in.”

He added: “It was a good feeling to break Anthony’s record. He has given me a lot of encouragement and he was happy for me.

“He even sent me a text and gave me a call during the week to congratulate me. We’re still on good terms.”

On Monday, Odunaike and co went to high-flying Worthing and despite going a goal down in the opening minutes, a blistering strike from Day and a rare goal for Quincy Rowe before the break ensured a three points.

And fresh off his recent scoring spree, the Nigerian forward became the 40th player to reach a century of appearances.

“I’m very proud of the achievement, it feels great for both myself and the club. Hopefully there are many more to come,” Odunaike said.

With the season closing in, he now faces a battle with Day for the club’s Golden Boot.

In hope of a third consecutive award, Odunaike trails the midfielder by a single goal with five games to go.

He said: “It looks like we have a good run-in, and I’ll try to get as many goals as I can to help out.

“I don’t have an exact target, although I’d like to beat my total of 16 from last season.”

Next up for Walton Casuals, 16th in the Ryman Division One South, is a test against play-off hopefuls Herne Bay on Saturday.
